The area of the Rainbow 5 showing is underlain by andesitic to mafic volcanic rock of the Lower Jurassic Telkwa Formation, Hazelton Group. A stock of granodioritic quartz feldspar porphyry of the Late Cretaceous Bulkley Plutonic Suite intrudes the volcanic rock. The stock is known as the Sunsets stock.

A 10-metre wide zone of intense epidote-chlorite alteration occurs in a gossanous zone in andesite and contains poddy mineralization consisting of 10 to 15 per cent fine-grained pyrite, malachite staining and rare irregular feldspar veins to 1 centimetre. A grab sample of the poddy mineralization assayed 6 parts per billion gold, 2.2 grams per tonne silver, and 1.1 per cent copper (sample YR-22, Assessment Report 21765). The mineralized pod measured 30 by 30 centimetres on surface.
